John Sutherland Egerton, 6th Duke of Sutherland ( May 10, 1915 - September 21, 2000 ), was a British peer , art collector and politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

Egerton was born to John Egerton, 4th Earl of Ellesmere and Lady Violet Lambton. As his father's Heir Apparent , he carried the courtesy title Viscount Brackley . He was educated at Eton College and graduated from Trinity College . As captain of a tank unit he moved to France with the British Expeditionary Force and was captured in Saint-Valery-en-Caux in 1940. He spent four years in a prisoner of war camp.

When he returned from captivity, his father had just died on August 24, 1944. He inherited the title of nobility as 5th Earl of Ellesmere , including the associated seat in the House of Lords . The inherited family fortune included an extensive collection of paintings, including masterpieces from the Orléans collection . The inheritance tax forced him to sell many parts of the famous painting collection.

Upon the death of his distant relative, George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland , he inherited the titles of Duke of Sutherland , Marquess of Stafford , Earl Gower , Baron Gower and Baronet of Sittenham as his closest male relative . However, he did not inherit his fortune and property, which, along with his title of Earl of Sutherland , went to the next of kin, George's niece Elizabeth Janson .

In 1984 he sold five masterpieces to restore the garden of his property, which he then opened to the public. Ten years later he was against the relocation of several of his paintings in a new gallery in Glasgow by the National Gallery of Scotland . He preferred that they be spread out within Scotland.

Membership in the House of Lords

He had been a member of the House of Lords since 1944 and was a member of the Conservative Party . In Hansard can be found from the period 1944 to 1959, numerous speeches by him. In the following period he apparently hardly took part in the parliamentary sessions. He finally lost his seat in parliament through the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Politically, he was active as a county councilor in Berwickshire , particularly at the local level.

family

He married on April 29, 1939 Lady Diana Percy (born November 23, 1917, † June 16, 1978), the daughter of Alan Percy, 8th Duke of Northumberland . After the death of his first wife, he married the former interior designer Evelyn Moubray on August 16, 1979.
