Earl of Ellesmere is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after the small town of Ellesmere in Shropshire .

The title was created on July 6, 1846 for Lord Francis Egerton, MP. This was the youngest son of George Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland . Along with the earliest title , he was given the subordinate title Viscount Brackley , of Brackley in the County of Northampton .

His great-great-grandson, the 5th Earl , also inherited the title 6th Duke of Sutherland in 1963 . The Earldom and the Viscountcy have since been subordinate titles to the respective dukes.

The heir ( Heir apparent ) is the eldest son of the current title holder, James Egerton, Marquess of Stafford (* 1975).
