Helene Staehelin

Helene Stähelin (born July 18, 1891 in Wintersingen , † December 30, 1970 in Basel ) was a Swiss mathematician, teacher and peace activist.

Between 1948 and 1967 she was president of the Swiss section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and its representation in the Swiss Peace Council .

Early life and academic work

Stähelin was one of twelve children of pastor Gustav Stähelin (1858-1934) and his wife Luise (née Lieb). In 1894 the family moved from Wintersingen to Allschwil .

Stähelin attended the Basel daughter's school (today Leonhard High School ) and then the University of Basel and the University of Göttingen .

In 1922 she taught mathematics and natural sciences at the daughter institute in Ftan . In 1924 she received her doctorate from the University of Basel with her dissertation The characteristic numbers of analytical curves on the second-order cone and their Study image curves , under the supervision of Hans Mohrmann and Otto Spiess .

In 1926 she became a member of the Swiss Mathematical Society .

Between 1934 and 1956 she worked as a teacher at the Protestant secondary school in Zug .

After her retirement, she returned to Basel, where she helped Otto Spiess process the letters from the Bernoulli family .

Political activism

As a pacifist Stähelin active in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom ( Women's International League for Peace and Freedom , WILPF) and dealt with the problem of scientific warfare.

She was president of the Swiss section of the IFFF between 1947 and 1967. The main agenda at this time was the United Nations Organization , Nuclear Weapons and the Vietnam War .

Because of her work as a peace activist, she was monitored by the Swiss authorities in the 1950s. Her files in the Federal Prosecutor's Office were kept secret until 1986.

Stähelin also campaigned for women's suffrage in Switzerland , which, however, was no longer achieved during her lifetime.
