Ferdinand Lamey (born December 20, 1852 in Heidelberg , † March 5, 1925 in Freiburg ) was a German librarian, teacher and writer.

Life

Ferdinand Lamey was born in Heidelberg on December 20, 1852, but spent his childhood in Karlsruhe after his father had been transferred to the royal seat as the main post office treasurer. He began his school education in 1859 in the pre-school of the Karlsruhe Lyceum . Because of his father's transfer, he spent the other school years in Freiburg, Konstanz and Mannheim and finally passed his school leaving examination in Würzburg . There and in Munich he then studied German Philology. In 1880 he received his doctorate from the University of Würzburg with a dissertation on Brother Wernher. His life and poetry , which appeared in print in the same year by the Karlsruhe publisher CF Müller .

In December 1882 he was appointed to the Grand Ducal Court and State Library in Karlsruhe, where he was initially entrusted with the management of the main alphabetical catalog and the incunable catalog as well as with the lending business as an assistant researcher. In 1883 he made his state examination in philology. His tasks also include the description of the Romanesque manuscripts; his findings in this regard were incorporated into two supplements to the library's printed manuscript catalog.

In 1886 Lamey began to publish music, theater and art reviews for the "Badische Landeszeitung"; thus began his career as a writer. Since he was satisfied with his library activities, but not with the formal employment, he switched to school in 1889. The Realschule in Achern appointed him professor, but as early as 1892 he was called back to Karlsruhe, where he taught at the higher girls' school. He wrote a number of festivals for school performances until he succeeded in writing a first play for the court theater as well. His one-act opera Der Lotse , for which his friend, the court church music director Max Brauer, had composed the music, premiered in 1896 and was adopted by theaters in Strasbourg , Lucerne and Kassel . The success encouraged him the following year to perform the opera in three acts Morgiane with motifs from 1001 nights , the music of which was also by Brauer. He let his experiences in the Baden capital flow into some of his literary works.

In 1902 Lamey was transferred to the higher girls' school in Freiburg, where he taught until his retirement in 1919. Six years later, on March 5, 1925, he died in Freiburg.
