Hollekamp lime works
The Hollekamp lime works was a plant in Ahaus for the production of quicklime for agriculture and the (construction) industry with an associated quarry and named after the operator's family name. The quarry was an important outcrop of the Upper Cretaceous and is known for its fossil finds. The "Wüllen formation ", which is still so called today, is named after the current Ahaus district of Wüllen , to which the quarry belonged . After the limestone extraction stopped, the quarry became a lake and is no longer accessible. Nevertheless it is a registered paleontological ground monument.
history
Historical field names such as Kalkdiek testify to the fact that the use of the deposits began a long time ago. Since 1895 lime has been extracted on a large scale, initially with a pickaxe, later, until 1986, with dynamite and then exclusively mechanically. In 1995 the company was shut down. The former company premises are now owned by the Ahaus municipal utilities and are designated and fenced off as a water protection area. At the northwest corner, an accessible point offers a view of the terrain and the remaining part of the steep walls that still protrude from the water. The information boards there provide a brief outline of the geology and history of the Hollekamp lime works.
Geological structure and fossils
In the Hollekamp lime works, predominantly white to light gray limestone of the lower and middle Turonian , but also of the cenomancy, was exposed . Sea urchins and mussels were the most common fossils, but also brachiopods , belemnites and ammonites . Finds of the mussel Inoceramus lamarcki with a length of 80 cm have been made in Wüllen. The most outstanding find is a single bone of a sea turtle (Cheloniidae).
