Schwienheer quarry

The abandoned Schwienheer quarry , also known as “Dicke Busch” or “Klippkuhle”, is located near the Mittelland Canal northwest of the Uffeln district of the city of Ibbenbüren in the Steinfurt district .

It is the mining site of a copper shale deposit from the Permian . From 2005 to 2009 employees of the LWL Museum für Naturkunde carried out an excavation. They secured over 1,700 finds.

The finds at this site include primarily the fossils of fish, including the predatory fish Reticulolepsis exsculpta and the tank fish Menaspis armata . An almost completely preserved dinosaur skeleton of the species Protorosaurus speneri was also found .

The quarry has been a ground monument since 1993 .
