The Schlupkothen nature reserve is located in the north of the Schlupkothen district of Wülfrath , Mettmann district . It is located in the area of the Schlupkothen quarry near the Bochumer Bruch .

More than 45 million tons of limestone were mined in the quarry from 1898 to 1960 . The 33.37 hectare, water-filled quarry, which has been enclosed by a circular hiking trail with viewing platforms since 2003 , has been a nature reserve since 1984 because of its special importance as a reptile and amphibian habitat . The protection ends automatically when the limestone quarry is cultivated again.
