The nature reserve Steinbruch Helmke is a 23.27  hectare nature reserve (NSG) south of Letmathe in the urban area of Iserlohn in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1986 the Arnsberg district government designated the area as a NSG by ordinance . The NSG was designated again in 1997 by the district council of the Märkischer Kreis with the landscape plan No. 4 Iserlohn . The Kupferberg nature reserve to the east is partially separated from the NSG by only one path.

Area description

The NSG is the former Helmke quarry. In the quarry there are semi-arid grasslands, ruderal meadows , small bodies of water and caves. Animal classes reptiles (reptilia) and amphibians (amphibia) occur in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The nature reserve was designated for the preservation and development of a former quarry and as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. As with other nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area became a nature reserve “because of its scenic beauty and uniqueness”.
