The Sonderhorst nature reserve is a 25.87  hectare nature reserve (NSG) in the city of Iserlohn in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NSG was designated in 1997 by the district council of the Märkisches Kreis with the landscape plan No. 4 Iserlohn . The Burgberg nature reserve to the west is partially only separated from the NSG by a path. The nature reserve The Emst is located east only about 100 meters away.

Area description

The nature reserve, which consists of two separate areas, consists of a quarry wall and various deciduous forests and grasslands on mass limestone. The Dechenhöhle , Knitterhöhle and the completely natural Hüttenbläserschachthöhle are located in the karst underground of the area . The latter is also a habitat and winter quarters for bats , including the water bat on the red list .

Protection purpose

Nature conservation serves to preserve the quarry wall as a geoscientific object, to preserve the caves and to protect endangered animal and plant species, for example pearl grass beech forest, semi-arid grassland and sloe bushes.
