The lake in the mountain is southwest of Messinghausen , Brilon . Other names for the lake by locals and divers are Tauchersee in Messinghausen , Steinbruchsee , the Blauen and Blauer See . The An der Burg nature reserve borders directly to the north . The quarry lake belongs to the FFH area of the Diemel and Hoppecke water system (DE 4617-302).

The quarry was operated by the Schneidewind company. In it diabase was obtained. The dismantling stopped in 1984. After the pumps were switched off, the main fracture area filled with a lake down to a water level of 45 m. Separated from the main part of the quarry with the lake, there is another area of the quarry to the Hoppecketal. In the past, the broken material was transported to a loading station directly on the Hoppecke.

The quarry lake has been used by amateur divers since the 1990s, who have to pay admission to the lake. Even in summer the water temperature at a depth of 40 meters is only 4 and 6 degrees Celsius.

From 1996 to 2012, 300 rescue missions were necessary due to diving accidents. Seven divers died. The Westfalenpost documented fatal diving accidents in September 2001, July 2007, September 2007, February 2009 and August 2010. In 2016 a diver was in mortal danger when he carried out an emergency ascent due to technical problems and survived. Because of the danger in the lake, divers must have an advanced diving license and at least 100 cold water dives in order to dive in the lake.
