The nature reserve An der Burg with a size of 4.5  hectares is located to the west or south-west of Messinghausen in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG consists of two areas.

Area description

The NSG is part of the Diabaskuppe An der Burg . In the NSG there is grassland with bushes. The grassland of the southern part consists of grasslands . Right next to the southern area is a quarry with the Blue Lake . This blue lake is used as diving water. You can dive up to 40 m deep in the lake. The northern sub-area begins directly at the residential development and is the north-facing slope of the mountain to the Hoppecke . Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG. It broods of Red-backed Shrike in the area.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the grassland with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
