Stemmel nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stemmel nature reserve with a size of 3.4  hectares is located west of Madfeld in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan .

Area description

The NSG is an herb-rich mixed beech forest and strips of bushes with limestone rocks and a former limestone quarry with structurally rich small relief. The beech forest is around the break. In the former break there is a low-growing area of bushes with hornbeams, some of which are strongly branched. At the time of the designation, there was a species-rich limestone lawn on the bottom of the quarry.

Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

The NSG is surrounded by intensively used grassland.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
