Hansenberg (mountain)

The Hansenberg is a 560.2  m high mountain in the north-eastern foothills of the Rothaargebirge . The mountain is located south of Messinghausen in the urban area of Brilon , North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ). Most of the Hansenberg was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in the Hoppecketal landscape plan on January 25, 2002 . The NSG has a size of 58.9  ha .

The NSG represents a sub-area in the Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) water system Diemel and Hoppecke (Natura 2000 no. DE-4617-302) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 with a size of 606 ha.

The Hansenberg is largely covered with beech , more precisely Hainsimen beech forest. On the western slope of the Hansenberg there is a former quarry with rock walls up to 40 m high. A narrow field ridge runs southwest from the hilltop.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect the forest and the former quarry. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
