The Steinbecke nature reserve with a size of 43.11 hectares is located in the western urban area of Brilon and includes the Steinbecke and tributaries with their floodplains from the source to the Möhne . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . The Waldbruch nature reserve borders to the west and the Oberes Möhnetal (Brilon) nature reserve to the east .

Area description

The NSG is the Steinbecke valley system from the source to the Upper Möhnetal nature reserve . In addition to the streams, the floodplain is part of the NSG. In the floodplain there are swamp forests, alluvial forest relics and alder forests that accompany the stream. In addition to the natural deciduous forests, there are also many red spruce forests in the NSG.

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the floodplain of the Steinbecke and its tributaries should be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
