Remains of the mine shaft

The nature reserve Fledermausstollen am Thülener Stein with a size of 1.8 hectares is located southwest of Radlinghausen in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG is identical to the FFH area Bergwerk Thülen (DE 4517-305). In the east, the NSG borders the K 60 .

Area description

The NSG is a mine site of the former Thülen mine with a tunnel. The Kalkspatabbau was run to about 1982 to 6 soles. The maximum depth of the shaft was 63 m. The floors leading from the shaft are up to 140 m long. The excavation cavities are approx. 5 m wide and 6 m high and statically stable.

After the end of mining, the mine site was used as a landfill and largely backfilled. The shaft was completely filled and sealed in 1988. At the lowest point of a fenced-off, funnel-shaped depression, however, there is still an open mine entrance, which is grated and lined with concrete pipes with a diameter of around 1.5 m in the entrance area. Furthermore, there is an inclined tunnel with an open, non-grated entrance area at the upper western edge of the funnel-shaped depression. The funnel-shaped recess has a z. Sometimes there are holes in the rock face, otherwise it is ingrown with bushes and tall perennials.

The tunnels are winter quarters for bats, which is of European importance because of the number of wintering bats. There were u. a. the Bechstein bat , the pond bat and the great mouse-eared bat have been detected. With nine proven species, the Thülen mine is an important winter roost for bats throughout the country. In addition to the occurrence of nine bat species, the very high number of hibernating bearded bats is particularly noteworthy.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the tunnels as winter quarters for bats. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
