The nature reserve Almetal with a size of 93.8 ha is located north of Alme in the urban area of   Brilon and includes the Alme with their floodplains up to the district boundary. The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . The NSG belongs to the FFH area Forests and Sources of the Almetal (DE 4517-301). Directly to the north, in the city of Büren or in the Paderborn district, is the Almetal nature reserve (Büren) .

Area description

The NSG is the Almetal. In addition to the river, the floodplain belongs to the NSG. In the floodplain there are swamp forests, alluvial forest relics and alder forests that accompany the stream. There are also wet and wet grasslands in the floodplain.

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the meadow of the Alme is to be protected and optimized. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
