Buchholz nature reserve (Brilon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buchholz nature reserve with a size of 259.3  hectares is located west of Bleireinigung in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . A smaller area is separated from the rest of the area by a quarry access road. With the exception of a small area, the NSG belongs to the FFH area Buchholz near lead washing (DE 4518-301).

Area description

The NSG is a red beech forest with many limestone rocks and extensive rubble heaps . The rocky areas have vegetation rich in moss and small ferns. There is a large amount of holly in the area. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG. There are two large limestone quarries on the eastern edge.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
