The forest quarry nature reserve with a size of 11.3 hectares is located northwest of Scharfenberg in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . The NSG almost entirely includes the forest quarry settlement. Two parts of the landscape protection area Feuchtgrünland Bruchen and Waldbruch border the NSG in the west and south. To the east lies the Steinbecke nature reserve .

Area description

Several branches of a source fan of the Steinbecke stream lie in wet grassland. The moderately moist to moist, very rush-rich grassland was mainly used as pastureland and sometimes also as pasture when designated. The stream is accompanied in the lower part by a multi-row wood of alder banks. The area is divided by a municipal road that runs roughly in a south-north direction. The wet grassland west of the municipal road is less rush-rich and is drained by shallow trenches, with the trenches along the driveways being deeper.

According to the landscape plan, the NSG represents an important stepping stone biotope with high development potential and, together with the nature reserve wet grassland quarries and forest quarries , it forms a habitat for amphibians, moths and rare and endangered bird species of the largely open grassland with sparse woody vegetation. In the northwest of the NSG there is a spruce afforestation which affects the habitat quality of the protected area.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

The landscape plan explains the NSG: “Protection of a grassland area with rare and endangered animal and plant species. Preservation and optimization of a wet grassland area with high ecological site potential as a habitat for sometimes rare and endangered animal and plant species; Securing the traditional use of grassland through contractual offers for the maintenance of this wet meadow complex; Protection of a stepping stone biotope in connection with similar grassland NSG to the southwest ("Fractures") and east of this area ("Bindel").
