Hermelenstein nature reserve

The Hermelenstein nature reserve with a size of 1.05 hectares is located southeast of Wülfte in the urban area of Brilon . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . It is one of 31 nature reserves in Brilon which belongs to the group of limestone peaks with special prohibitions. The NSG belongs to the FFH area Kalkkuppen near Brilon (DE 4617-303).

Area description

The NSG is the Kalkfelskuppe Hermelenstein . On the hilltops running in a west-east direction, rocks emerge openly and reach a height of about seven meters. At the top of the mountain there is a one to five meter high, interrupted and partly stepped ledge of rock with typical fern and moss vegetation. There is grazed shrubbery to the north of the field area. the bushes mainly consist of hazel and sloe. An old ash tree with a diameter of 80 cm at chest height is also in this NSG area. South of the ledge is a grassland area in relief and planted with individual shrubs and groups of shrubs. Grassland also includes grasslands . In the upper, shallow and partly rocky-stony area, the summit is overgrown with gentian-schiller grass lawns. In the lower part of the hilltop, the lean meadow is designed as a red fescue ostrich pasture. The Schillergrasrasen is partly rich in herbs and species with lots of sun rose and medicinal thyme. Partial areas are also grassed with red fescue and ostrich grass. In the southern area there are species-poor grazing areas.

The landscape plan says about the protected area: “With its ledge and limestone semi-arid grassland, the area typically represents the vegetation and structure of limestone peaks in the Brilon area. The NSG Hemelenstein is an important part of the regional network of limestone peaks and ridges in the Brilon area. "

In the west, the NSG borders on the landscape protection area Lean Grassland Complex south of Wülfte . In the north, east and south the landscape protection area of the open country complex borders on the Wülfte / Brilon plateau .

Protection purpose

The grassland areas are to be protected in the NSG. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Prohibitions

In addition to the normal prohibitions in nature reserves, the Hermelenstein NSG, as with the other 31 limestone peaks, has additional prohibitions. It is forbidden to fertilize, roll and drag the Brilon limestone peaks. No more than two livestock units per hectare may graze at the same time. Furthermore, mowing is only permitted from July 1st of each year.
