Veilchen, Mazur based on Russian motifs is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 256). The work was first performed on May 26, 1861 in Pavlovsk .

Remarks

In the summer of 1861 Johann Strauss Sohn made another guest appearance in Russia for about six months. The opening concert of his guest performances took place on May 26th according to the Gregorian calendar (May 14th according to the Julian calendar valid in Russia). In addition to his own compositions, the band he directed also played works by other well-known composers such as B. Johann Sebastian Bach or Richard Wagner . The mazurka dealt with here, which was then called La Violetta , was one of his own compositions . It only received the German name when it was published in Vienna. In the work, Strauss took up and varied Russian themes. In doing so, he paid tribute to the tastes of the local audience. This enthusiastically received the composition. In the further course of his guest concerts in the St. Petersburg area in 1861, Johann Strauss repeatedly performed the mazurka with great success. Later the work was also published in Vienna. Today the composition is only played occasionally. This is also due to the fact that Strauss composed many similar works, which then displaced each other from the concert programs.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 12 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
