history
The Blue Lake was created as one of two lime pits of the Porta-Union Westfalica cement works in Neesen . Limestone was extracted here in order to burn cement . The company was founded in 1889 as Portland cement factory and fell in 1931 to the Great Depression to the victim. On New Year's Eve 1899/1900 the upper pit ran full of water and could no longer be used as a source of raw materials. The lake created here was used as a bathing lake for a long time, until the 1950s .
The lower pit continued to be extracted until the plant was shut down on January 1, 1931. The disused site was used by the Wehrmacht from 1938 , and the pioneers from Minden practiced here. In 1956 the newly founded Bundeswehr took over the area as a military training area .
