The Venekotensee is a lake created artificially by an original gravel pit on the Lower Rhine river Schwalm . It is located not far from Brüggen in the Maas-Schwalm-Nette nature park , around 25 km west of the city of Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia and has an area of around 11.5 hectares.

The Venekotensee belongs administratively to the community of Niederkrüchten and is located about one kilometer northwest of its district Overhetfeld . The Venekoten holiday village was built on the shores of the lake in the 1960s , but has since developed into a general residential area with predominantly single-family houses. Apart from that, there are also two large apartment blocks with small apartments right on the lakeshore .

The lake extends parallel to the Schwalm on its left bank, only separated from the river by an approximately 20 m wide dam with a partially paved hiking trail. The lake measures 900 m in northeast-southwest direction and has an average width that varies between 50 and 150 m; its entire shoreline is around 2500 m. It lies at a height of 34 m above sea level .

The lake is a popular destination for weekend tourists, cyclists and anglers in the region. Bathing in the lake is forbidden, but the relevant signs are mostly ignored, which can lead to penalties. The bathing operation often ensures that the lake and shore are polluted by garbage that has not been disposed of in the summer months.

The German- Dutch border runs just two to three kilometers further west and the Dutch city of Roermond is around 15 km from Lake Venekotensee.
