The Lake Neurath , sometimes Martinssee called, is a Tagebaurestsee northwest of today Grevenbroich proper place Neurath .

Origin: Neurath-Nord opencast mine

The lake emerged from the remaining hole in the Neurath-Nord open- cast lignite mine . Here, in the "Neurath 3" mine field , formerly "Princess Victoria" , lignite was mined from 1960 to 1985. The opencast mine was opened by Martinswerk GmbH for chemical and metallurgical production from Quadrath-Ichendorf , which is why the lake is also called Martinssee . The operation was managed on behalf of the Martinswerk by a consortium under the leadership of Strabag Bau-AG . Bucket wheel excavators were used for mining in the opencast mine ; the overburden was tipped using conveyor belts and spreaders . The coal was transported by truck to the Martinswerk, where it was used to generate electricity and process steam for the production of slag clay .

After the shutdown, the open pit area was recultivated , partly backfilled and partly flooded.

Successor use

The Neurather See and its surroundings are primarily used today for local recreation . The bank is accessible for hiking and walking by a path that runs around it. Bathing is not allowed for safety reasons.

The fishing club ASV Glückauf manages the lake as a fishing ground for carp, roach, perch, tench, pike, pikeperch and eel, among others.

A building yard for the city of Grevenbroich was built on the site of the day-care facilities of the former open-cast mine .

A small amount of warm wastewater from the nearby RWE power plants in Frimmersdorf and Neurath is discharged into Lake Neurath via intermediate biological clarification ponds . This increases the water temperature of the lake slightly; in winter it freezes over later than other bodies of water and is therefore a popular winter resting place for water birds, including some threatened and rare species.

On April 13, 1992 an earthquake occurred in the region with an epicenter of Roermond with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale . As a result, the embankment of the lake slipped over an area of around 900 m². Parts of the hiking trail were also affected. A resting bench, rubbish bin and signs were thrown into the water; these were recovered by divers in 1996.

Photovoltaic system

Photovoltaic system on the north bank

On the north shore of the lake, i.e. on the south-facing slope, RWE installed an open-air photovoltaic system in 1991 .

The system was based on findings from the similar photovoltaic system in Kobern-Gondorf , which was built three years earlier . Consisting of 3,700 modules with a total area of 3,500 m², the system on Lake Neurath generates around 270,000 kWh of electrical energy annually with a specified 360  kWp . At the time of construction, the Neurath plant was the largest photovoltaic power plant in Germany; this was the first time that large modules were used in Germany.

The facility is the northernmost station on the Energy Road .
