The Rönkhausen pumped storage power plant is a pumped storage power plant in Finnentrop - Rönkhausen in the Glinge district in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

description

The power plant operated today by Enervie subsidiary Mark-E was completed in 1969 and has an output of 140  megawatts . The lower basin forms the Glingebach dam in the valley of the Glingebach , which holds around 1.3 million m³ of water. The also artificially created upper basin has a usable volume of a good million cubic meters and is over 270 m higher on the Dahlberg (height: 570  m above sea level ). At the maximum filling level, each of the two basins has a water surface of around 100,000 m². The water is pumped up to the upper basin through the approximately 900 meter long pressure tunnel and lowered again via two Francis turbines . A large part of the power plants is built underground.

The grid connection takes place at the 110 kV high voltage level in the power grid of the distribution network operator Enervie Vernetzt .

Refurbishment, modernization and expansion (2018/19)

After almost 50 years of operation, the pumped storage plant required extensive renovation and revision work. The investment volume for this was in the order of magnitude of approx. 25 million euros. In detail, the sealing of the upper basin was renewed, the storage capacity was increased by 45 megawatt hours through the erection of a wave protection wall and the two machine sets were overhauled. The operating license for the storage plant, which originally expired in June 2018, has therefore been extended by the Arnsberg district government until 2045. With a view to the energy transition, the importance of the pumped storage power plant is seen not only as a regional energy supply, but also as a load carrier in the event of a possible failure of other alternative energy producers.

In March 2018, the power plant was transferred to its own company, "PSW Rönkhausen GmbH & Co. KG", of which the operator Mark-E and Stadtwerke Aachen are a strategic partner, each with 50 percent. Mark-E leases the pumped storage plant from the company and markets the electricity it produces. Since the renovation was completed, the power plant's storage capacity has been 735 megawatt hours.

tourism

A popular excursion destination for hikers is the circular path on the top of the dam of the upper basin on the Dahlberg, which is accessible at all times. From there you have a wide view of the Sauerland . With the modernization of the pumped storage plant, an "energy path" with information boards was opened here in June 2019.
