The Mark-E Aktiengesellschaft is a regional power companies in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany , with headquarters in Hagen . The company was created on January 1st, 2002 from the merger of Elektromark and Stadtwerke Hagen. The name, often also spelled Mark-E , is derived from the Elektromark (Kommunales Elektrizitätswerk Mark AG) and thus indirectly from the historic county of Mark .

Corporate structure

Shareholders

The Mark-E is a 100% subsidiary of Enervie . Their shareholders are in turn

The remaining shares (14.16%) are distributed among the cities of Altena , Plettenberg , Halver , Schwerte , Kierspe , Herdecke and the communities of Schalksmühle and Herscheid .

Holdings

On January 1, 2007, Mark-E and Stadtwerke Lüdenscheid founded Südwestfalen Energie und Wasser AG as a joint holding company, which has been operating under the ENERVIE brand since February 1, 2010. With this merger, customers in the Märkischer Kreis will continue to be supplied by their regional energy supplier.

Under the name of Kommunales Elektrizitätswerk Mark AG, Hagen, the company acquired a 26% stake in the THTR-300 nuclear power plant in 1968 , which was shut down in 1988.

Business area

Mark-E supplies around 6.4 billion kWh of electricity annually to around 368,000 private, business and industrial customers and energy trading partners, primarily in the Märkischer Kreis and in the cities of Hagen and Herdecke. The largest single customer is Stora Enso's paper mill in Hagen-Kabel. In the city of Hagen, the company is also responsible for the heating , gas and water supply .

Power plants

Mark E power plant and paper mill of Stora Enso in Hagen-Kabel

The Mark-E power plant portfolio comprised three combined cycle and coal-fired power plants in

and a pumped storage power plant in Finnentrop ( Rönkhausen pumped storage plant ). In the meantime, however, the company is gradually withdrawing from conventional electricity generation. The last hard coal block in Werdohl-Elverlingsen was finally shut down on March 31, 2018. The Hagen-based company also operates three run-of-river power plants on the Lenne , various photovoltaic systems and a wind energy system.

At the end of 2004, a biomass power generation plant (BVA) was also completed in Hagen-Kabel. The system, which costs around 50 million euros, was built in cooperation with the aforementioned Stora Enso and, among other things, recycles their wood waste. The steam turbine generates an electrical output of 20 MW and also supplies the Stora Enso process steam for paper production.

Overall, the company had a net output of around 1,300  MW ( as of 2014 ). In 2013 around 2.7 billion kWh of electricity was generated from hard coal, natural gas, biomass, hydropower and solar energy.

In 2013, an application was made to shut down all power plants, which, however, was not originally supposed to happen until 2020 due to the maintenance of security of supply in the regional distribution network. At the beginning of 2015, however, a solution was found for a better connection of the ENERVIE network, so that it could be closed from 2016.

The Rönkhausen pumped storage power plant will continue to operate after extensive renovation and capacity expansion. The gas and steam power plant in Hagen-Kabel was completely shut down on March 31, 2016. The E4 hard coal block in the Elverlingsen power plant was operated until March 31, 2018 and then finally shut down. The Herdecke gas and steam turbine power plant will be kept available in coordination with the project partner Statkraft until further notice, depending on the market situation, in particular for peak load and reserve purposes.
