Lido on Lake Ternscher

The Ternscher See is a 15 hectare lake in the Ternsche farming community , town of Selm ( Unna district , North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is an artificial lake that was created in 1934/35 when the clay was extracted for the expansion of the nearby Dortmund-Ems Canal , when a layer of groundwater was unintentionally pierced so that the pit was filled with groundwater .

The lake has a maximum length of approx. 600 m and a maximum width of approx. 380 m. It is fed by several springs in the lake. Its water quality is controlled and meets the highest criteria. On its south bank there is a bathing beach and a campsite; the private properties on the north bank are partly built with weekend houses and partly with villas. The Ternsche as a tributary of the Stever , which flows into the Lippe , forms the outflow of the Ternscher See .

In 1938, mammoth tusks, rhinoceros skulls and reindeer bones were found during excavations.
