The Versetalsperre , also called Verse for short by residents , is a reservoir in the Sauerland between Lüdenscheid and Herscheid ( Rhenish Slate Mountains ). The dam dams the small river Verse , which rises near Meinerzhagen and flows into the Lenne near Werdohl . Until this dam was built, today's Fürwiggetalsperre, a few kilometers upstream, was called the Versetalsperre.

description

The Versetalsperre counts beside Bigge , Möhne and Sorpe to the large reservoirs of the Sauerland. During the National Socialist era, prisoners from the Hunswinkel labor education camp were used to build it from 1929 to 1952 . The construction work was interrupted several times.

The dam, owned by the Ruhrverband , is used to supply drinking water, to raise the low water level in the Ruhr and to generate electricity. The hydropower plant , with an installed capacity of 400 kW, generates around 1.2 million kWh of electricity per year (electricity required by around 350 households).

The barrier structure consists of an earth dam with a concrete core, similar to the dam of the Sorpe dam , as both dams were planned at the same time. On the water side he has a pile of stones.

The two bottom outlet lines each have three closing devices, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of each line. A flood overflow is located on the left side of the dam, seen in the direction of flow. Overflowing water is drained to the underwater using a concrete chute.

Before the construction of the dam mentioned here , the name 'Versetalsperre' was used for another dam, namely for today's Fürwiggetalsperre , which dams the Verse and Fürwigge rivers a few kilometers above in Meinerzhagen .

construction

The Versetalsperre was built from 1929 to 1952 by the Hochtief company with the use of the Reich Labor Service and later by prisoners from the Hunswinkel labor education camp (AEL) . During the period of its existence, around 5000 workers from the Soviet Union, Germany, Poland, Belgium, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and the Netherlands were admitted to the AEL. At least 550 prisoners were killed by starvation, hard labor, beatings and shooting.

The construction required the resettlement of 91 residents from 9 settlements, whereby the flooded villages are preserved to this day and when the water level is low, for example. Some of them are even visible (hence the name Klamer Brücke → Derived from the village of Klame)
