The Seilersee in Iserlohn , officially Callerbachtalsperre and sometimes called Kallerbachtalsperre in cartographic works , is one of twelve process water dams located in the Arnsberg administrative region .
Geographical location
The dam is located at the southern foot of the Seilerwald. It is surrounded by the Iserlohn districts of Griesenbrauck, Bilveringsen, Wermingsen and Nussberg.
history
In 1913 the construction of the Callerbach dam began. After a year of construction, the official building inspection as a dam took place on June 10, 1914. At the time, the construction of the dam ensured the supply of fresh water to the Iserlohn-Ost sewage treatment plant, which no longer existed, during times of scarcity. Also, the water level of Baar stream as the main receiving water of the urban sewage system was regulated.
Even then, the area around the Callerbachtalsperre was a popular excursion destination, and the Iserlohn brewery built a restaurant on the lake in 1924. In 1919 the municipal “Seilersee Stadium” was built, which was used for soccer, handball and hockey and was originally laid out in 1913 as part of the “ Kaiser Wilhelm facilities”.
In 1937 the "Haus Seilersee" was built on the bank, which in the past was often used as a restaurant. The building is currently empty and owned by the city. In severe winters, the lake was used as an ice rink.
In 1963, the Iserlohn City Council approved the extension of Autobahn 46 . There were previously violent protests by environmentalists as the highway crossed the lake. Several concrete bridge piers were anchored in the lake. In 1976 the road was completed and it was opened to traffic.
In 2005, a steel sculpture about 12 meters high and weighing 2.4 tons was erected in the lake near Vogelinsel. It shows an orchid with pink and white colored petals and was made by the London artist Mark Quinn. Previously, you could see the sculpture on the 50th Biennale in Venice and in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk , Denmark, look. It is on loan from the Iserlohn entrepreneur Andreas Dornbracht.
Local recreation and leisure opportunities
The area around the Seilersee has been important as a local recreation area since the Iserlohn-Ost sewage treatment plant was closed . A 1.6 km long path with benches leads around the lake. From the dam you can reach the Bismarck Tower, built in 1915, on the A 1 hiking trail signposted by the Sauerland Mountain Association .
Various sporting options are through the Ice Rink Iserlohn , a sports and saltwater pool, the outdoor pool Schleddenhof, a rowing boat rental, a soccer field, tennis courts, a skate area , a boules track, a mini-golf facility and possibly an equestrian center nearby. Since 2008 the Iserlohner Stadtwerke-Lauf has been held annually as a benefit event at the Seilersee. The run is a 24-hour run. You can start as a so-called freerunner for the 6h, 12h or 24h run. The proceeds from the event will go to a charitable cause.
There is an aviary by the small lake below the dam . This area is also a meeting point for ship model builders .
