The Iserlohn private brewery was a brewery in Iserlohn in the Sauerland , which produced Pils and Brause from 1901 to 2014 .

Company history

The brewery (2005)

On August 28, 1899, 27 Iserlohn citizens decided to found the Iserlohn AG brewery . After the laying of the foundation stone a year earlier, beer was first released in March 1901. As early as 1905 and 1906 11,640  hectoliters (hl) of beer were brewed, and in 1920 they achieved sales of over 980,000 marks.

In 1921 the Germania brewery in Dortmund took over the majority of the shares. Again just a few months later, the Dortmund Union brewery took over the Iserlohn brewery. The beer output then increased steadily. In 1939 it was already 34,000 hl. In the war years from 1942 to 1945, beers of poor quality were brewed as there were bottlenecks in the supply of raw materials . At the beginning of 1951, the sales figures rose sharply, so that large investments could be made from 1959 onwards.

In 1961 the brewery achieved an output of 92,300 hl, which increased to more than 100,000 hl in the following year. The production of various types of beer was stopped in 1962 and only Iserlohner Pilsener was brewed.

In 1966 the packaging was changed. So were of wood metal drums, from the flip-top bottle the euro bottle and timber from plastic crates. In 1973 the production of 300,000 hl was exceeded. On this occasion a printed 0.5l stoneware beer mug was brought out. From 1978 to 1980 investments were made in the company premises. The bottle cellar was rebuilt and the storage capacity increased, the costs amounted to around 60 million DM. The company had been a GmbH since 1994 and one year later it was the first brewery in Germany to receive the EC eco- audit according to EU Directive 1863/93 (Iserlohn brewery Öko-Audit GbR consisting of the Iserlohn Produktions GmbH brewery and the Iserlohn GmbH brewery).

Return to independence

In 1997 the Iserlohner brewery was up for sale, but initially remained with the Dortmund company Brau & Brunnen . In 1998, Iserlohner Winter was successfully introduced as a new dark beer brand . For the 100th anniversary of the brewery, numerous events took place throughout the year. At the turn of the millennium, the brewery created Beer 2000 - the beer for the new millennium .

Already in 2001 the preservation of the brewery was put to the test. From 2002 the brewery was managed by Peter Michaelis. At that time, sales were falling sharply, and costs and earnings were not in a good relationship to one another. In 2003, Brau & Brunnen intended to close the Iserlohn plant under the management of Michael Hollmann. Most recently, around 163,000 hl of the Iserlohner brand were filled by a total of 85 employees with a capacity of approx. 400,000 hl. Concerned citizens operated the website rettet-iserlohner.de or attached stickers to their cars with the words "Rettet Iserlohner". But managing director Peter Michaelis as well as the Iserlohn entrepreneur Gerd Heutelbeck as the main shareholder and his CFO Christian Ilske took over the company and renamed it Privatbrauerei Iserlohn GmbH . 30 of the 80 jobs to date were initially lost before the workforce grew again to 76 in 2004. The business was run by Michaelis and Ilske. Almost 450,000 hl left the brewery every year.

In April 2006, the Iserlohn private brewery acquired the production facilities and facilities of the Denninghoff brewery in Gießen with a capacity of around 150,000 hl through its newly founded, wholly-owned subsidiary "Privatbrauerei Gießen" . Only sales, logistics and marketing remained with the Gießen brewery. From September 1, 2008, Christian Rolinck became managing director of the Iserlohn private brewery. He previously managed the A. Rolinck private brewery in Burgsteinfurt , replacing Michaelis and Ilske. In 2009 the output was around 540,000 hl, 130,000 hl of which were from the Iserlohner brand. 700,000 euros were invested in a new labeling system.

Sale and realignment

Lars Junker became managing director in May 2010. On July 29, 2010 it was announced that the company had been sold retrospectively to January 1, 2010 to the former CEO of the beverage company Brau & Brunnen , Michael Hollmann. The production now consisted of the "Iserlohner" brand and the production of beers for exclusive brands from trading partners. For 2010 the output was given as around 600,000 hl.

As part of the brand realignment, most of the previously launched products were withdrawn from the market in 2011. In addition to a redesign of the labels and advertising material, the 0.5l swing top bottle was also introduced for the main product "Iserlohner Pilsener".

The Giessen private brewery was spun off from the Iserlohn private brewery in 2011 through a spin-off under new ownership. The Iserlohn draft beer and catering business for 30 and 50 liter kegs went to Krombacher Brewery retrospectively as of January 1, 2011 . Since September 2011 she has been looking after around 500 gastronomic objects in the Sauerland through Iserlohner Gastro GmbH. The beer will continue to be brewed by the Iserlohner brewery. In addition, the managing director of the Iserlohner brewery also runs the business of Gastro GmbH, which belongs to Krombacher. The bottled beer will continue to be marketed by the Iserlohner brewery itself. The trademark and trademark rights remained with the Iserlohner Brewery.

In the summer of 2012 rumors arose about temporary quality problems that were later confirmed by the brewery and attributed to "raw material fluctuations". At the Iserlohn (2012) 80000 St. Iserlohner bottles of beer, 20,000 hl draft beer and 400,000 hectoliters of beer as were last trademark for supermarket chains ( Edeka / Trinkgut , such as the price-entry mark and Essmann) Traugott Simon made. In March 2014 there were 53 employees.

Bankruptcy proceedings

On November 14, 2013, the company applied to the Hagen district court to open insolvency proceedings under self-administration . After the provisional self-administration, the competent local court opened the insolvency proceedings on February 1, 2014 and appointed the previous provisional administrator as the insolvency administrator. Production was stopped on March 31, 2014 after a sale of the brewery could not be completed.

In mid-June 2014, it became known that the Iserlohner Brewery had been sold to a group of investors around the brewery heir Christian Rolinck. At the beginning of 2015, brewing operations should be resumed with a new workforce and a focus on exporting to Asia.

In November 2014, it was announced that the Chinese investor and main financier Zhang Wu Xing had put the brewery up for sale in China.

In mid-2017 it was clear that the brewery would remain closed and that the buildings, technical equipment and furnishings would be recycled.
