The Eicherscheid flood retention basin is a flood retention basin of the Erftverband on the upper Erft in Bad Münstereifel , Eicherscheid district , in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The retention basin located about 3 km south of Bad Münstereifel protects the cities of Bad Münstereifel and Euskirchen . The dam was planned by the Großer Erftverband . It creates storage space of around 900,000 m³. This is sufficient to absorb the flood expected once in 100 years . The maximum amount that is discharged from the basin is 7 m³ / s. In this way, a maximum flood inflow to the pool of up to 42 m³ / s is reduced by around 35 m³ / s.

So that the basin is available with all of its storage space in the event of a flood, only 30,000 m³ of 900,000 m³ of storage space are filled in permanent backlogs. The small water area is constantly dammed for operational reasons.

A slope overflow structure was built as flood relief .

leisure

The small reservoir of the retention basin is popular with anglers and those looking for relaxation. In the summer there are many waterfowl and picnics on the banks.
