Rudolf Wertz

Rudolf Wertz (born September 16, 1909 in Vienna ; † 1966 ) was a doctor who, as an Austrian, received the honorary title of " Righteous Among the Nations " .

Rudolf Wertz saved many Jews from deportation to Poland in 1941 by issuing certificates of serious illness to them. He acted on humanitarian grounds and demanded a pro forma ordination fee of only 5 Reichsmarks from his Jewish patients.

One of those rescued was the Jew Gertrude Fritz, who when she came to Wertz was already on a deportation list. Wertz confirmed that she had an ulcer in her uterus and prescribed her six weeks of bed rest. Although Gestapo doctors came to her from time to time, they believed Wertz's medical certificate and Ms. Fritz was not deported during this time.

The Gestapo later discovered Wertz's relief operations and he was transferred to a penal company. He was only released at the end of the war and then worked again as a doctor in Vienna. On May 21, 1966, Yad Vashem presented Rudolf Wertz with the award “Righteous Among the Nations”.
