The Jröne Meerke ( Rhenish , high German literally Green Sea ) is a pond (small lake , Rhenish sea ) with a surrounding park in the Neuss city forest in the north-west of the city.

Emergence

The lake was created as a quarry pond for the extraction of sand and gravel as building material. After the completion of the dismantling, the excavator hole with its bank areas and the surrounding area was designed in a natural way in the 1970s and converted into a public green area.

use

The Jröne Meerke is part of a green corridor through Neuss, which extends along the north canal from the Rheinpark via the rose garden , the city garden , the city forest and other, partly public, partly private green areas to the northern city limits of Neuss. In Kaarst , the green stripe continues with the Kaarster See and stretches over the Vorster forest and the Pferdsbroich nature reserve to the eastern Niersaue .

The Jröne Meerke is, in conjunction with the adjacent nature areas, an important local recreation area in Neuss. The recreation area is popular with joggers, walkers, as a resting place and for other leisure activities. There is a small beach on the lake, a sunbathing area, a playground, a barbecue area and other facilities.

Goose population

The lake is known for the large geese population , which has become a nuisance since 2012. The number of resident geese more than doubled between 2009 and 2012 from around 80 originally. Snow , gray , Canada and white-fronted geese as well as other goose species can be found at the lake . There are also swans as well as other ducks and water birds . During the bird migration , more than 200 wild geese also rest on the Jröne Meerke.

The massive droppings of birds cause hygienic problems. The feces could cause excessive eutrophication of the water and thereby an algae plague . Germs such as salmonella and E. coli bacteria can be transmitted to visitors to the park. A children's playground was closed due to the risk of infection. During 2015, a package of measures was planned to improve the water quality and reduce the geese population.
