Irineu Roque Scherer

Irineu Roque Scherer (born December 15, 1950 in Cerro Largo , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † July 2, 2016 in Joinville, Brazil ) was a Brazilian Roman Catholic clergyman and most recently Bishop of Joinville .

Life

Scherer came from the south of Brazil. In his childhood his parents, the German-born cattle drover couple Avelino Aloysio Scherer and Maria Alvina Spohr, moved with the family from the state of Rio Grande do Sul to Toledo (Paraná) near the Paraguayan border. At the age of 13, Irineu Roque Scherer, who had six siblings, entered the Episcopal Boys' Seminary in the Diocese of Toledo . In 1964 he went to the Archbishop's College for Boys in Curitiba , where he graduated from school in 1970. He entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Curitiba , where he completed his studies in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on January 7, 1978 for the Diocese of Toledo.

After his ordination he worked as a spiritual director in pastoral care and took over the direction of a seminary in Toledo. He became pastor in Quatro Pontes and Vila Nova a few kilometers north of Toledo and was last cathedral pastor in Marechal Cândido Rondon on the Paraguayan border. He studied church history at the Gregorian University in Rome and taught philosophy at the University Paraná-West (UNIOESTE) in Toledo and church history at the Interdiocesan Center for Theology (CINTEC) in Cascavel (Paraná) . On April 15, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Garanhuns in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco in the northwest of the country. The old archbishop of Cascavel and former diocesan bishop of Toledo (1960–1978), Armando Círio OSI , donated him episcopal ordination on June 20, 1998 ; Co- consecrators were Lúcio Ignácio Baumgaertner , Archbishop of Cascavel, and Geraldo Majella Agnelo , Archbishop of Londrina and also former Bishop of Toledo (1978-1982). His motto was FIDES MUNDUM VINCIT (“Faith conquers the world”). In August 1998 he was inducted into his episcopate.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Scherer on May 30, 2007 to succeed Orlando Brandes , who had become Archbishop of Londrina in 2006, Bishop of Joinville, Santa Catarina state . The induction ceremony on August 19, 2007 at the Cau Hansen Convention Center in Joinville was attended by 10,000 people.

Irineu Scherer has been close to the Focolare movement since he was a seminarian . In addition to initiatives such as the Fazenda da Esperança , an addiction project by the Franciscan Father Hans Stapel , who is associated with the Focolare , he also sponsored the heralds of the Gospel in his diocese . Within the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) he was responsible for media pastoral care , New Spiritual Communities (NGGs) and addiction pastoral care as a commissioned bishop .

Irineu Roque Scherer died surprisingly for those around him at the age of 65 of a heart attack , he was found dead in his bedroom in the Bishop's Palace. He was a cousin of Odilo Cardinal Scherer , the Archbishop of São Paulo , who also delivered the Requiem ; a common uncle was Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer . His brother Inácio Afonso Scherer (* 1952) is also a priest and was cathedral pastor at the Catedral Cristo Rei bishop's church in Toledo from 2002 to 2019 . Irineu Scherer was buried in the bishop's crypt in the crypt of Joinville Cathedral.

Irineu Roque Scherer was an honorary citizen of Quipapá , Jupi and Garanhuns in the state of Pernambuco, an honorary citizen of Joinville and the states of Pernambuco and Santa Catarina.
