Garanhuns , officially Município de Garanhuns , is a city in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco . It was founded in 1879 and had an estimated population of 139,788 in 2019. The city is located on the Borborema plateau and is 230 km west of the capital Recife .
Diocese of Garanhuns
The city is the seat of the Garanhuns diocese, established in 1918 . The episcopal church is the Cathedral of Santo Antônio .
