The Neusser Stadtwald is a forest area in the middle of the urban area of Neuss . Most of it is located in the stadium district and covers an area of 23.6  hectares .

Geographical location

The Neuss city forest is about 2.1 km long and has an area of 23.6 hectares. It has been designated as a landscape protection area since 1971 and extends over the districts of Stadionviertel , Morgensternsheide and Neusser Furth . The north channel runs through the entire city forest. There are several lakes and ponds in the forest, including the Jröne Meerke recreation facility .

The Broichhof waterworks, which were built between 1911 and 1914, and the district sports facility of the police sports club are also located in the city forest .

Flora and fauna

It is a mixed deciduous forest with a diverse tree species composition, in which 28 species are counted. The most important tree species in the alluvial forest are alder , ash and elm , with the approximately 90-year-old ash tree being the oldest. Additionally, there are occurrences of red and pin oaks , yews , Douglas pine and horse chestnut and black locust . In 2007, maple trees were replanted as part of the 20-year forest management plan adopted in 1989 , as hurricane Kyrill caused visible damage. The forest also has a very pronounced herb layer , which is mainly composed of wood anemones , lesser celandine , star chickweed , meadow foam herb , forest strawberries and the bitter-sweet nightshade .

The urban forest is the breeding area of many birds such as kestrels , tawny owls , pheasants , woodcock , magpies, as well as various types of woodpeckers and tits . The forest also provides a habitat for blindworms , common frogs and natterjack toads . About 80 geese live on the Jröne Meerke . Furthermore, a significant common toad population has developed on the Jröne Meerke . In order to protect the amphibians, “extensive amphibious control systems with channels, tunnels, guide stones and spawning waters” were created in cooperation with the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation and NRW Road Construction . As part of the systematic recording of planning-relevant animal species carried out in 2010, eight bat species - including the noctule bat , the brown-winged bat and water bat - were recorded.
