The Cappenberger See was created by expanding a former excavator hole and is located in Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia) in the statistical district of Nordlünen , one of the three earlier localities (next to Alstedde and Wethmar) of the former municipality of Altlünen .

Surname

The name of the lake is derived from the Cappenberg Castle , a former monastery located in Cappenberg , a district of the town of Selm , three kilometers from the lake . The castle in turn is located on a hill of the same name.

History of origin

The lake was created by dredging clay soils that were needed between 1919 and 1928 for the construction of the single- track Lünen – Münster railway line . The railway line went into operation in 1928. Until the 1950s, parts of the lake were used as a bathing establishment .

Lake and surroundings

The lake has a length of 450 m and a width of 150 m. Its depth is about two meters. The longitudinal expansion runs almost in a north-south direction. The lake is called "a paradise for anglers" and day passes are offered for admission. There is a pedal boat rental on the shore, but the lake is not open for swimming. The spacious outdoor swimming pool Cappenberger See , located on the southern eastern shore of the lake, has been offering bathing opportunities since 1956 . The outdoor swimming pool was renovated in the early 1980s and reopened on June 6, 1982. Every year the swimming competition for the Lüner Lippe Cup with national and international clubs takes place in the outdoor pool. According to a survey, this is the second best! Outdoor swimming competition in Germany. When the summer weather is nice, the outdoor pool is frequented by up to 10,000 visitors a day.

Other leisure and recreational facilities in the area around the lake are tennis courts (Tennisverein Altlünen eV) and children's playgrounds. In severe winters, the lake is used as an ice rink. The Cappenberger See is therefore of great importance as a local recreation area for the population. In the south of the lake a sports field was built in 1963, which is used by TuS Westfalia Wethmar and which was given to this football club in 1997 by the city of Lünen.

A short stretch of the Way of St. James runs along the western shore of the lake . Other regional hiking trails also lead past the Cappenberger See when coming from the Cappenberg Forest . On the northeast corner of the lake is the Freiherr-vom-Stein Youth Hostel Cappenberger See , which was used from September 2015 to January 2016 as accommodation for 122 asylum seekers and refugees.
