The Köttinger See is located in the municipality of the city of Erftstadt in North Rhine-Westphalia and is part of the Villeseen . It is designated as a landscape protection area.
Location and description
The Köttinger See is with a water surface of 41.5 hectares a larger lake of the Ville lakes. It is located north of the town of Köttingen between Lake Concordia in the west and Lake Dinnendahl (also Roddersee ) in the east. It receives its inflow in the north from the Kocherbach and from the Zieselsmaar and in the east from the Dinnendahlsee. The outflow runs via a cascade into Lake Concordia.
There are several contaminated sites in the catchment area of the Köttinger See . To the north there is a dry ash dump that is covered with loess and is now partially swampy. There are two more contaminated sites in the west and on the south bank.
As part of the Villeseen, the Köttinger See also belongs to the Rhineland Nature Park .
Origin and history
Like all lakes in the Villeseen, the Köttinger See was created with the end of the lignite mining . It was built in 1955 in the area of the former United Ville mine , making it one of the youngest lakes in the Lake District. During the lignite mining, the water was used for mechanical cleaning of factory and power plant water.
The lake has been part of a nature reserve since 1972 and was used by anglers until a few years ago. In the meantime, protected spawning zones have been set up in the lake all year round, which are not allowed to be fished or entered.
