The peat bog lake is an approximately 24 hectare former quarry pond in the area of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Hörstel in the Tecklenburger Land . It is located in the middle of the 57 hectare recreational area peat bog .

history

The lake was built between the late 1970s and early 1980s and owes its creation to the construction of the section of the A30 motorway between Rheine and Ibbenbüren . The dredged sand was used for the construction of the motorway and a lake 800 m long and 600 m wide with a depth of up to 20 m was created.

In 1985, as part of the further expansion of the local recreation area, an approximately one-hectare bathing bay with a sandy beach and a sunbathing area was built. With the exception of a fish spawning zone, bathing is also allowed in the rest of the lake.

particularities

In 1980, an inaccessible wetland biotope was created in the immediate vicinity and an area of 70,000 square meters was forested around the lake. The lake itself is surrounded by an approximately 2.5 kilometer long circular hiking trail, which is coupled with a forest and geological educational trail. The latter shows 23 rocks, each with information boards providing information about their origin and history.

The lake is home to a local sailing community that regularly hosts national surfing and sailing championships on it. Another sporting event at Torfmoorsee has been an annual triathlon since 1985 .

In the lake operations building there is a small kiosk, public toilets and the watch stations of the DLRG Hörstel and the DRK, which are manned from April to October. Several water sports clubs have settled on the lake. The Seglergemeinschaft Hörstel 1978 e. V. uses this lake for sailing and windsurfing .

In summer, the peat bog lake is used as a bathing lake for the local population. It is also accessible to divers .
