The Fuelbecketalsperre was built by a water cooperative in the Altena district of Altroggenrahmede . As early as 1883 a committee was formed to build a dam in the Fuelbecke, but the power plant operators could not come to an agreement. This was only made possible by a royal decree of December 30, 1891, which provided for the formation of public water cooperatives for industrial purposes. The cooperative was formed on October 6th, 1893. The dam's planner and construction manager was Prof. Intze from Aachen. Construction work began at the end of October 1893. The keystone was laid on May 22nd, 1897. The Fuelbecketalsperre and the Heilenbecke-Reservoirs were the first two reservoirs in the Ruhr catchment area . In mid-October 1907, a newly built filter system of the Altena waterworks was put into operation at the Fuelbecketalsperre.
The creek Fuelbecke is dammed up , which flows like the Kuckuckbach into the eastern arm of the dam and after leaving it becomes a tributary of the Rahmede . The Riethahner Bach flows into the western arm of the dam . With a storage space of 0.7 million m³, the dam is the smallest dam after the Callerbach dam in the Märkisches Kreis . The barrier wall was constructed with a base width of up to 16 m, a crown width of around 3.50 m, a height of up to 30 m and a crown length of 145 m.
The gravity dam made of quarry stone , built according to the Intze principle , was renovated around 1990 with a cut-off wall in front of it and a control corridor was installed.
The builders of the dam and members of the water cooperative were engine operators (hammer companies, mills, etc.). Since the capacities of the dammed ponds were not sufficient for continuous operation of the engines in dry summers, the dam was intended to ensure that the engine operations could be operated year-round without interruption. Since the dam is no longer needed for engine purposes, the water cooperative was dissolved. The city of Altena became the owner of the dam. The dam is now used by the Altena municipal utility to supply drinking water . The waterworks is located directly below the dam and is also a popular local recreation destination for tourists, hikers and joggers. The main hiking trail 7 of the Sauerland Mountain Association leads past the dam. The hotel and restaurant located near the barrier wall was closed in 2009. Entering the area belonging to this, such as the viewing platform above the barrier wall, is no longer permitted.
