The Heider Bergsee is a residual lake of the lignite mining in the Rhenish lignite mining area south of Cologne in the area of the city of Brühl in the Rhein-Erft district .

location

In the middle part of the Ville , where small areas of brown coal were mined from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century , today's villa lake landscape emerged , an approximately 50 km² large, extensive area with mixed forests and over 40 lakes.

Thanks to careful recultivation , a species-rich flora and fauna has settled here again over the decades. Long before it became a legal obligation, the Hürth mine director Adolf Dasbach did pioneering work here with regard to the dismantling of his charred pits.

The Heider Bergsee is located southwest of the nearby Brühl district of Heide . It can be reached via the B 265 (Luxemburger Straße) or from the city center of Brühl via the L 184 (Theodor-Heuss-Straße) junction Willy-Brandt-Straße.

description

Footpath between two parts of the neighboring Ville Lake

The Heider Bergsee as one of the medium-sized lakes in the Ville lake chain is a nutrient-poor, calcareous still water . These bodies of water are artificial residual lakes with shallow water zones created by the former opencast mine , surrounded by smaller forest areas with predominantly local mixed trees. Poplar , pine , red oak , larch , alder , beech , locust and birch alternate .

The lake has an area of approx. 35 ha . The rather small adjacent Schluchtsee can only be seen as an appendage of the Heider Bergsee, but this reaches a depth of approx. 7.5 meters. Here are raptors ( Pandionidae ), grebes ( Podiceps cristatus ,) geese (Anseriformes), kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis ) and moorhen ( Gallinula chloropus watching) as breeding birds.

Over the decades, the thousand-leaf milfoil ( Myriophyllum heterophyllum ) has also settled beneath the surface . This species prefers to colonize stagnant and slowly flowing water and sometimes forms dense populations. Spangehl & Scharrenberg (1985) described the occurrence in North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time from the Heider Bergsee near Brühl, where this species can still be found today.

In the edge areas of the waters you can find, among other things: dwarf hedgehog cob ( Sparganium minimum ) - common water hose ( Utricularia vulgaris ) - broad-leaved stendrums ( Epipactis helleborine ).

Furthermore, through the development and promotion of reed zones in the water bodies, habitat for numerous migrating water birds in autumn and winter and other aquatic animals such as amphibians ( green toad , Bufo viridis ) and aquatic insects (e.g. scarlet dragonfly , Ceriagrion tenellum ) should be preserved or expanded .

history

The lake was created from the renaturation of an open- cast brown coal mine. See also Rheinisches Braunkohlerevier . Lignite has been mined here since the 19th century. The Gruhlwerk and the Roddergrube were supplied from here. The first Union briquettes were made from the lignite from this mine, among other things. The dismantling ended in 1964, the following year the Heider Bergsee was created. The outdoor pool has existed since 1967 and the campsite since 1968.

use

Recreation

Parts of the site are left to their own devices and are declared as nature reserves . Ville, Kottenforst and the recultivated former lignite opencast mining areas with their lakes also serve as a recreational area for the people in the Cologne / Bonn region .

Campers with caravans, motorhomes and tents are accommodated all year round at the campsite on the southern bank of the Heider Bergsee. The lido with a fine sandy beach and meadow is directly adjacent to the campsite.

The approximately 5.12 km long loop around the lake is often circled by runners, walkers, cyclists or other amateur athletes.
