Map of the Villeseen |
The Donatussee is a lake in the urban area of Brühl in the Rhein-Erft district . It is located in the Ville east of the Erftstadt district of Liblar . It is a residual lake from the former lignite open pit Donatus mine , which in turn was named after Sankt Donatus .
Emergence
The lake was created from the remaining holes of the charred lignite - opencast pit Donatus . Lignite was mined here from 1889 to 1948. On the western edge of the pit stood the large Donatus briquette factory .
After the end of coal mining in the region and set the drainage , the remaining hole from 1960 slowly filled with groundwater . The briquette factory was completely demolished.
Successor use
Landscape protection and local recreation area
The Donatussee belongs to the area of the Villeseen in the Rhineland Nature Park . There are several other lakes within a few hundred meters: in the north Upper , Middle and Lower Lake , in the east the Villenhofer Maar , in the south the Zwillingssee . With a depth of 15 meters, the Donatussee is the deepest of the Villeseen.
The lake itself is under landscape protection . Protected spawning areas for amphibians as well as protection and resting areas for other animals are set up here all year round , which cannot be entered. The steep banks are covered by a belt of reeds . Bathing and water sports are prohibited, but fishing and diving are generally permitted.
The area around the lake is used by walkers, hikers, joggers and cyclists for recreation. The lake is a stop on the cycling tour " See 10 lakes" in the city of Brühl.
Since 2004 there has been an annual fun run around the Donatussee .
art
From 1998 the artist Klaus Osterwald recorded noises in Donatussee with underwater microphones and created a series of sound art works under the name Donatus subaqua - sound expeditions in Donatussee , which were presented on radio (WDR, swr, hr) and various exhibitions.
