The Aasee is an artificially created lake in the city of Bocholt with about 32  hectares of water. It serves as a local recreation area, the total area of which is around 74 hectares, as well as flood protection.

Leisure, sport & culture

There are numerous sports and leisure opportunities on and around Lake Aasee; for example it is possible to sail and surf. There is also an outdoor swimming pool with a sandy beach, monitored by the DLRG , and the Ottilie beach café on the southeastern bank. The west bank includes an area that is approved for model boats . The Aasee Triathlon has been held every year in June since 1987 . The meadows around the Aasee are used for numerous events.

The Textile Museum Bocholt , whose building is modeled on a weaving mill from the 19th century , is only separated from the Aasee by a street .

history

In the 1970s, the Aasee began to be created by dredging. The project was finally completed in 1983. Before that, the extensive area served as a floodplain .

The Bocholter Aa was led south around the lake to compensate for the level of the Aasee. Locks regulate both the inflow and outflow of water. At one of the locks are the remains of the "Königsmühle", the walls of which date from the late Middle Ages .

Furthermore, a small nature reserve for water birds with artificial nesting holes was created.
