The Elfrather See (colloquially for short: E-See ) is located in the northeast of the city of Krefeld in the Uerdingen , Vennikel district and in the Uerdingen and Traar districts . It is named after the Elfrath district, which belongs to Gartenstadt . Around him is the Elfrather See recreation area named after him .

description

The Elfrather See today essentially consists of a 2.2 km long regatta course with a water surface of around 62  hectares . This is divided into three areas. The largest part is made up of the regatta course, with which five different bays are connected. Three so-called bird protection islands are intended to protect species. A former swimming lake and a fishing lake to the west complement the lake landscape. Around the Elfrather See there are around 138 hectares of green space, on which there are, among other things, a playground, barbecue areas, shelters, sports facilities and, in the west, a dog free run area. The paths lead close to the water around the entire lake and are mainly paved and without winter maintenance. It can be reached by car via 7 parking spaces (some with parking fee, closes at 9 p.m. in the summer months). The northern part can be reached by bus line 3 from Moers (stop at Gaststätte Maus). With line 058 (e.g. stop “Elfrather See”) you can reach the southern part of Krefeld.

General plan

free time activities

The lake offers opportunities for activities on land such as walking, running, cycling, mini golf, soccer, basketball, beach volleyball, picnicking or barbecuing, and on the water such as sailing, rowing, windsurfing, swimming, kayaking and diving. The Elfrather See recreation area is used for various sports and cultural programs such as regular sports activities, concerts or the annual triathlon.

Bathing in the main lake is prohibited for safety reasons. For this purpose, the swimming lake was specially created next to the regatta course (bathing is closed here due to excessive pollution). There is an unofficial section, in which between the former lake and the east bank of the regatta course nudist -Anhänger be tolerated. There is a large lawn for sunbathing around the lake. Admission to the swimming lake is free, a fee is only charged for parking in the summer months. In the immediate vicinity is the playground, the beach volleyball field, free sanitary facilities with showers and toilets, a kiosk, the mini golf course (incl. Kiosk) and a barbecue area with a stone fireplace. There is a large meadow specially reserved for stunt kite flyers (north of the swimming lake). A café is located at the southern tip of the lake. There is an open-air meadow for dogs in the west of the lake (accessible via Vennikelstrasse).

Water sports and boat use

The use of the water areas is chargeable and therefore only allowed with a license from the city of Krefeld. This can be obtained either from the Krefeld Sports and Baths Office, Bruchweg 26/28 (from 3.30 / day ticket) or through membership of one of the following clubs: These are a sports club that offers all kinds of water sports (Turnverein Vennikel 1912 ), three sailing clubs (sailing club Crefeld, Krefelder sailing club 1981, sailing club Bayer Uerdingen), the Crefeld rowing club 1883, the Windglider department of SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen (formerly: Windglider Club Crefeld), the German Underwater Club Krefeld and the Uerdinger Kanu Club 1931.

The inland waterway traffic regulations (BinSchStrO) and the statutes of the Elfrather See, which were last renewed in 2001, apply.

With an appropriate license, fishing is permitted on some of the banks of the regatta course in Elfrather See. The fishing lake in the west is only released for members of the local fishing club. For a long time, the lake was of no interest to divers, only the fire brigades and various rescue services train here regularly. However, a disused boat was sunk in the lake, which as a wreck is a certain attraction for divers in the southeast bay despite the poor visibility.

The DLRG and water rescue of the German Red Cross cause in exchange supervision on and around the lake.

Triathlon

The Covestro Triathlon has been held annually around the Elfrather See recreation area since 1988. This triathlon is Krefeld's largest sporting event with up to 1,600 participants who face the challenge of swimming, cycling and running and over 10,000 spectators. Above all, the route with swimming in the Elfrather See, cycling on the cordoned off motorway feeder, running on the lake, the central transition area and the supporting program make the triathlon a special experience for spectators and participants. The following offers are available: Olympic distance, sprint and SWK popular triathlon, relay competitions, deaf championship, trial triathlon and company cup.

Surf park

An outdoor surfing facility with a campsite, climbing park, skate park and beach volleyball courts is to be built north of the former bathing lake by 2023. Template: future / in 3 yearsIn December 2019, the city of Krefeld and the German project developer Elakari had a letter of intent for a surf park with the technology of Wavegarden signed. This is expected to cost around 25 million euros and, with a surfing area of 2.8 hectares with waves up to 1.95 meters high, is the "" surf spot of the Ruhr area, attracting 200,000 visitors annually.

Emergence

The Elfrather See was created from a gravel pit that is filled with groundwater . The excavation was carried out by a floating dredger using the wet excavation process typical of the Lower Rhine due to the low groundwater level. The removed gravel was used for the construction of the A57 motorway until the 1970s , for which the gravel pit was set up as the central material supply point. After the construction work was completed, the lake was steadily expanded from the 1970s and developed into today's local recreation area with many spacious green areas. It was not until the beginning of the 2000s that the lake was finally completed. The crossing Vennikelstraße was demolished in order to be able to extend the regatta course to a length of over 2 km.
