The Obersee is an artificially created body of water in Erftstadt , a city in the Rhein-Erft district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is part of the villa lakes of the Rhineland Nature Park , created by the mining of lignite .
location
The lake is part of a chain of lakes in the Ville , consisting of the Obersee in the far west, the Mittelsee , which is around three to four meters below, and the Untersee, which is around six to eight meters below . It is located in the south-east of the district of Brühl and in the western area of the district of Erftstadt . The chain of lakes is surrounded by other bodies of water. These are in the northwest of the Franziskussee , in the northeast of the Schluchtsee , in the southeast of the duck ponds and in the south of the Donatussee .
history
Lignite was mined in the region from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. From 1925 workers began to recultivate the land . The existing mine holes were filled with groundwater and were largely left to their further development - the Obersee was created. In 1965 a railway line on the Upper and Middle Lakes was dismantled. The lake was designated as a landscape protection area in 1972 and has been part of the FFH and nature reserve Upper, Middle and Lower Lake in the Ville chain of lakes since 2003 . In the southwest there is a contaminated site of excavated earth, building rubble, broken bricks, slag and ash. Experts continue to suspect that household waste could also be found there. Two other contaminated sites in the northwest consist of overburden, ash and mining residues.
fauna and Flora
Due to the recultivation, the nutrient input from the outside decreased, which increased the biodiversity. When reforesting, foresters used beech , pine , red oak and larch in particular . The population of dwarf hedgehog cobs is particularly endangered .
The main bird species are the middle woodpecker , the black woodpecker and the cormorant . In the riparian zones including the dragonflies were detected over 32 Early reeds hunters , the Common winter damsel , the Great Purple Emperor , the key spot Hawker , the Little Emperor Dragonfly , the top spot and the leucorrhinia caudalis . The particularly endangered species include the Ephemera glaucops from the family of mayflies and the scarlet dragonfly . The area continues to be the live coot , the great crested grebe , the tufted duck , the pochard , the pond and water rail and the little grebe . Real perch , bream , pike , rainbow trout , roach and rudd , tench and pikeperch live in the water .
Use and development
The lake is not designated as bathing water. Fishing is allowed with a fishing license . There is an extensive network of hiking trails around the water.
The LANUV recommends avoiding further nutrient inputs. Raising the water level by 30 cm could create additional shallow sections of water. In addition, the population of eels should be reduced.
