The Krickenbecker lakes , four by Abtorfung of fens formed lakes in Nettetal at the left Niederrhein in North Rhine-Westphalia . They were given their current form in the period from the 16th to the 19th century through large-scale peat excavation and the introduction of the river Nette . In 1938 the area around the Krickenbecker Lakes was declared a nature reserve (today NSG VIE-045 "Krickenbecker Seen und Kleiner De Wittsee").

Specifically, the lakes are Hinsbecker Bruch (water surface: 37.5 hectares), Glabbacher Bruch (36.0 hectares) and the somewhat older lakes Poelvenn (24.5 hectares) and Schrolik (15.5 hectares). They are partially traversed by the Nice and the Renne (Nice) . The suffixes "-Bruch" and "-Venn" refer to the earlier expression as a fen or swamp.

From the tower on the Hinsbecker heights you have a good overview of the lakes, which are partly covered with lake and pond roses in summer and framed by oak - beech forests, alder quarries and meadows. In the middle of the four lakes, but closest to the Glabbacher Bruch, lies Krickenbeck Castle .

The lakes are home to ducks , gray herons , great crested grebes , railings and reed warblers , among others . In addition to the water lilies, the plants here are also dragon root , orchid , king fern and Solomon's seal . Fish such as carp , pike and various types of whitefish are numerous.

In the nature reserve there is an important ground monument from Napoleonic times with the old north canal . The northern canal, which was never fully completed, was supposed to form a ship connection between the Maas near Venlo and the Rhine near Neuss .
