Radbodsee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Radbodsee, located on the right side of the Lippe , directly next to the Lippedeich, was created from underground coal mining at the eponymous Radbod colliery . It is owned by the city of Hamm and is also located on its territory, more precisely on the border between the city districts of Hamm-Mitte and Hamm-Bockum-Hövel .

The water is delimited in the east by the Römerstrasse, in the west by Lippehof and Nienbrügger Weg, in the north by the Hüserstrasse and in the south by the Lippe and Lippedeich. Its area is 5.4 hectares .

description

As part of the new construction of the Datteln-Hamm Canal until 1914, the Lippe was canalised from Heessen to Bockum-Hövel . In the process, its course has changed in places: it has been straightened parallel to the canal. As a result, one arm of the lip, the so-called "old lip", was severed near the former Radbod colliery . The Radbodsee was created in the area of this Lippe valley arm, whereby its basin was created by subsidence.

The pit water that had to be pumped out during underground mining of the adjacent Radbod colliery was collected here, giving the colliery a cooling water reservoir. As a result, the area covered by water increased considerably until a lake with a diameter of 50 hectares at the time of its greatest expansion was created. Nowadays this is fed by several streams. This includes above all the Geinegge , a former tributary of the Lippe, which was diverted into the Radbodsee in the course of the embankment of the Lippe and thus no longer has a direct connection to it. In addition, the clarified water from the Hammer sewage treatment plant is fed into the Radbodsee.

Due to subsidence, the Radbodsee is now much deeper than the Lippe; The underground coal mining by the Radbod colliery caused the Alte Lippe and the adjacent lake area to sink by several meters. The lowest point of Hamm is on the Am Lausbach road , very close to Lake Radbodsee. The embankment of the Lippe has increased the height difference to be overcome. In order to ensure the success of the embankment and not to reverse it, the water from the streams that flow into the Radbodsee must be pumped into the Lippe along with the sewage water. A pumping station 121.773 kilometers from the mouth of the Lippe pumps it up into the Lippe.

Planned decoupling of the Geinegge from the Radbodsee as a renaturation measure

The European Water Framework Directive has led to considerations to renature the Geinegge. In order to implement the Water Framework Directive, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has decided, among other things, to reconnect the Geinegge directly to the Lippe in addition to a management plan that is binding on the authorities. The guideline provides for all bodies of water to be in a good ecological and chemical state and to be maintained. The pumping station at the end of the Geinegge, however, forms an obstacle for migratory fish species, aquatic plants and small organisms in the Geinegge. In addition, it causes operating costs. A feasibility study prepared by an external engineering office is to look for ways to freely connect the Geinegge to the Lippe. Geinegge and Radbodsee should no longer influence each other afterwards. The question arises whether the decoupling of the Geinegge will reduce the nutrient supply to the Radbodsee. The study should cost 35,000 euros in 2010, 90% of which will be borne by the state. The Bockum-Hövel district council expressed the fear that relocating Lake Radbodsee into a natural bed would lead to the entire area around Lake Radbodsee "sinking down". The Hammer Environment Agency does not see such a danger. The Geinegge should flow into the Lippe on the eastern, not the western, side of the Roman road. There is still a natural gradient here, so the difference in altitude between the Lippe and the lower Radbodsee does not matter. Against this background, the district council also approved a feasibility study.

An equalization of the water levels of the Lippe and Radbodsee would endanger the nature reserve, in which the water level of the Radbodsee is artificially lowered in summer at the suggestion of the lower landscape authority so that the birds there can use the sandbanks. The water level of the Lippe is therefore higher than that of the Radbodsee almost all year round.

Alte Lippe and Radbodsee nature reserve

The western Lippeaue with the nature reserves Brauck, Eckernkamp and Tiebaum, Alte Lippe and Former Radbausee, the eastern Lippeaue with the areas Schlagmersch, Mühlenlaar, Oberwerrieser Mersch, Haarener Lippeaue, Munnebach and Schmehauser Mersch as well as the forest areas Frielicker Holz and Geithewald are which make it one of the country's most important rivers. There it has underwater vegetation which is of crucial importance for migratory fish species and is home to numerous species of flora and fauna typical of the floodplain.

The Alte Lippe and Radbodsee nature reserve stretches from Radbodstraße to Am Lausbach between Lippehof and Nienbrügger Weg. The Lippe estuary, which is worthy of protection, and the Radbodsee have richly structured bank vegetation and are resting and breeding grounds for numerous bird species. The nearby forest areas of Frielicker Holz and Geithewald are natural, species-rich oak-hornbeam forests. It is home to numerous endangered bird species, including black woodpecker and honey buzzard.

Such nature reserves are identified via landscape plans of the respective federal state, here North Rhine-Westphalia . All measures and specifications are summarized there. They aim to protect the existing status and maintain the current state. There are three legally binding landscape plans in Hamm. When the state reported the nature reserves in question to the " Natura 2000 " project , with which the member states of the European Union committed themselves to establishing a network of European protected areas, the Hamm-West and Hamm-Ost landscape plans were affected. They had to be adapted accordingly, whereby a total of six change procedures were necessary to establish the nature reserves. This was due to the fact that each of the protected areas distributed over the entire urban area had to be examined on a case-by-case basis.

As a result of the change in the landscape plans, a total of 978 hectares were designated as a nature reserve, which corresponds to an increase of 262 hectares (27%). The nature reserves, including the Alte Lippe and Radbodsee nature reserves, became part of the European “Natura 2000” network.

The landscape plans result in prohibitions and requirements. Entering and driving, camping, barbecuing and storing in the area of the lake is prohibited. The fishing rights for the fish are held by the Anglergemeinschaft Radbodsee eV

Due to the nature reserve character, there are no plans to dismantle the artificial system. If the Geinegge is reconnected to the Lippe as planned, at least a subdivision of the lake would have to be carried out, namely into an area with a stronger flow and into a still water zone.

Radbodsee leisure park

On the north shore of the lake there is the Radbodsee leisure park on 7,800 m 2, an indoor leisure park with sports, games and restaurants.
