The Große Auesee or simply Auesee from time to time also Große Aue - See in the East Westphalian town of Espelkamp in North Rhine-Westphalia is located west of the city center in the floodplain of the river Große Aue . This and the lake on Kleihügel to the north of it were created for the purpose of local recreation and are located on the shore of the river dykes.

Location, origin and use

The Great Auesee is a near-natural biotope that was artificially created between 1979 and 1981. Together with its immediate surroundings, this forms the nature reserve of the same name . Its water comes partly from the Great Aue, partly from an urban rainwater canal and partly from groundwater.

The lake is 550 m long and on average 80 m wide. In the northern part of Seewinkel, about 15 meters from the shore, there is an islet of around 50 m² with a single tree. On the west bank of the lake (right by the bridge over the Große Aue) there is a lookout point for observing the fauna of the lake. The average depth of the Auesees of 2 m is typical for a flat lake. In hot summers with little precipitation there is a risk of increased growth of blue-green algae, which is increased by the introduction of phosphate-containing water.

The lake is not designated as a fishing water.
