Hillerød Kommune [ ˈhiləʀœːʔð ] is a Danish municipality in the Hovedstaden region in north-east Zealand . As part of a new structural reform , the former municipalities Hillerød Kommune , Skævinge Kommune and part of Slangerup Kommune (all in Frederiksborg Amt ) were merged from January 1, 2007.
The municipality is 214.80 km² and has 51,183 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Denmark 's largest inland lake, the Arresø , and the third largest, the Esromsee , are both partly in the municipality.

Hillerød town
The main town in the municipality is Hillerød , which is the capital of the Danish region of Hovedstaden and a railway junction . It has around 28,941 inhabitants (as of 2006).
Hillerød was founded in the 15th century . Frederiksborg Castle ( Frederiksborg Slot ) in the city is the largest Renaissance castle in Northern Europe and is located on three islands in the middle of Lake Frederiksborg.
Hillerød is a regional center for the mechanical engineering industry .
Hillerød is also known for the Grundtvigs Højskole , named after Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig , a Danish adult education center for journalism, art, literature and politics. The Højskole has around 50 to 60 students (elever) per semester.
