The Arresø is an inland lake in the Hovedstaden region on Sjælland , north of Ølsted and east of Frederiksværk in Denmark .

With 39.87 km² the lake is Denmark's largest lake. It is connected to the Roskildefjord by a canal that was started around 1717 by Danish soldiers and Swedish prisoners of war. The lake borders on Hillerød Kommune , Gribskov Kommune and Halsnæs Kommune .

The average depth of the lake is 3.1 m, the greatest depth 5.6 m. The lake contains about 122.75 million cubic meters of water. The most important of the lake's tributaries is Pøleå . To the east of Frederiksværk is the Arrenæs peninsula , which protrudes into the lake from the west.

The lake was a fjord about 4000 years ago that was connected to the Kattegat . Due to the uplift of the land in the northwest of the fjord, today's lake was created after the end of the last ice age .

To the east of the lake is the round hill Bjørnehøj .
