Karen Angelo Hækkerup (born June 12, 1974 in Hillerød ) is a Danish politician of the Social Democrats . On October 3, 2011, she became Minister in the government of Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt , initially for social affairs and integration, and from August 9, 2013 for food and agriculture; on December 12, 2013 she was promoted to Minister of Justice . She resigned on October 10, 2014 to become Managing Director of Landbrug og Fødevarer , the industry association for Danish agriculture.

Life

The daughter of the teacher Erik Debois and the psychologist Kirsten Angelo Schmidt studied history at the University of Odense from 1994 after visiting the Odense Katedralskole , before studying political science at the University of Copenhagen from 1995 to 2000 and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts .

During her studies, she started in the local politics to get involved and was between 1998 and 2005 member of the City Council of Copenhagen and sat from 2001 to 2005 on the board of Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab (HS), the operating company of public health facilities in Copenhagen.

In the general election in 2005 it was for the Social Democrats for the first time in the Folketing elected and represented there first until 13 November 2007 the constituency Copenhagen Amtskreds and since the general election in 2007 the constituency Copenhagen Stork Reds . During her parliamentary membership, she was initially the spokesperson for her group for consumer protection between 2005 and 2007 and then from 2007 to 2011 she was spokesperson for legal policy. In 2008 she also became a member of the Protection Center against Incest in Denmark.

From 2011 to 2014 she was a member of the Thorning-Schmidt I and Thorning-Schmidt II governments in changing functions .

Karen Hækkerup is married to the MP Ole Hækkerup , who belongs to the traditional Hækkerup family of politicians. The couple has three children.
